Hi, I could do with some information or maybe a few links to help with a college course. I need to comment on the use of ladder logic. Its usability, complexity & practicality and its advantage / disadvantages.

I would say it`s a very good book, but i don`t see the answer`s to the question i posted. Or i may well be missing the point. Edited by Dave1971

then it will be difficult to start comparing... it is a subtle difference between all the different IEC 61131 languages and depending on what you want to do one will be better than the other what applications do you want to do? Beegee Edited by beegee

When you say compairing, i just need to know the basics as to what ladder logic functions as to its usability, complexity & practicality and its advantage / disadvantages. If that makes sense. Please go easy on me as i am a newbie.

Ladder is or better was simply said the equivalent of a relay logic. It has the big advantage that you can easily convert an old relay based system into a ladder diagram. In the meantime a lot of functionalities have been added to PLC's of which some are more likely to be programmed in a structured text way. the comparison or the advantages disadvantages are depending of what you wanty to do with it. If you just want a simple machine ladder will probably be the best solution. If on the other hand you want complete motion control you will probably end up with dedicated block or text based systems. Where to pull the line is mainly a question of habit in programming and experience. thanx for this one, I didn't know it yet....

This covers it pretty well: Wikipedia Its usability, complexity & practicality and its advantage / disadvantages summarized: Its useful for industrial machinery. Its simple, not complex. Its practical for simple, or discrete, logic control as opposed to continuous control, ie. analog, PID, etc.. Its advantages are its simple, originally designed for electricians to be able to read. Its disadvantages are poor math & continuous control capabilities, although that is not necessarily the case anymore, its still poor in this area when compared to other programming techniques. Its up to you to expand beyond that. Edited by GerryM
