justwhy2003 Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 hi how viable is it to use remote PC access software such a VNC to operate/monitor a Citect SCADA. are there any draw backs? i cant see how this wouldnt work... justin
tragically1969 Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 As the primary client its very viable, just use MSTSC with the /Admin switch, that's what we do when we are setting the systems up on site.
Nathan Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 It's a good administrative tool set. This approach is typically not ideal for users since multimedia doesn't work as well. It will probably work fine for 1 user. You need a "Terminal Server" to allow multiple concurrent users. This may or may not work with your SCADA package based on the licensing and file lock/concurrency type issues. The best way is to give it a shot. It's easy to allow "Remote" control then use Remote Desktop in Windows (mstsc.exe).
justwhy2003 Posted December 9, 2009 Author Report Posted December 9, 2009 Update: I have since used a VNC to access the Citect SCADA remotely with very good results. Not only does the VNC allow me to view the SCADA in real time but it also allows me to access the programming settings if there is a problem. On this particular site the control panel was about 200 metres away from the offices (waste water treatment plant) and so the network was difficult to acces with CAT 5 (too far away) and too expensive for fibre optic. In the end we used long range wi-fi connection between the control panel and the network server. If anyone needs it, I can probably get the seriel number easy enough. Thanks Justin
