I was using DraftSight, because it was the most Auto-CAD like product I could find that was free. I use it for panel layouts and wiring/hookup diagrams and general CAD. My company has gone the opposite direction; we bought six seats of AutoCAD Electrical, which costs an arm and a leg and probably a rib. But the sophistication and labor reduction and error-reduction make it worth it for us. In the middle range, there's AutoCAD LT. You will get the most compatibility and familiarity with other users, with the AutoDesk standard tools and commands and environments.

AutoCAD Electrical ROCKS for creating wiring drawings. As Ken said, it does cost an arm and a leg and several other parts, but for productivity it can't be beat. I started using it when it was still Via Schematic, offered by Via Development as an add-on to AutoCAD. Autodesk thought so much of the package that they acquired the company and rolled out AutoCAD Electrical. And AutoCAD LT is a good lower-priced package that maintains AutoCAD compatibility. There is also the JIC add-on symbol package offered on this forum, which has some handy stuff... http://forums.mrplc.com/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=146
