kolonelvonklink Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Hi I've waisted loads of time in trying to connect my keyence KV 40 with my laptop without succes. Now I've just received a Keyspan USA 19HS rs232 usb converter. But I'm quite scared to get started with this. Can somebody give me a step by step manual to get this right. I have: Laptop HP pavilion with W7 home premium service pack 1 64bits on this laptop virtualbox 4.1.18 with Windows XP SP2 32 bits guest additions installed the keyspan usa19HS converter and the and the sub 9 to rj45 cable (which worked on my older desktop with serial port) Thank you very much in advance regards Stefan
IO_Rack Posted July 7, 2012 Report Posted July 7, 2012 Before attempting to use the USB to RS232 converter, I would verify the physical serial port on the computer. Use Windows Hyperterminal to verify it's working properly: Open Hyperterminal. Select your com port (probably COM1). Set Flow Control to None. Short pins 2 and 3 then type inside the terminal window. You should see characters. Remove the short then type inside the terminal window. You should NOT see characters. If you do not see characters when the pins are shorted then the serial port is not working. If you decide to use the converter you can verify it by the same method only the com port number will be different.
Crossbow Posted July 7, 2012 Report Posted July 7, 2012 Make sure you install the drivers for the Keyspan. It will most likely install itself as COM8. I use and recommend that adapter all the time. Keep in mind that you can change that number. Keyspan provides a nice management software with the unit and you can customize the settings there. Also keep in mind that Windows recognizes each USB port as a different connection, so if you plug it into a different USB port next time, it may ask for the drivers again. That's Windows, not a problem with the hardware.
kolonelvonklink Posted July 8, 2012 Author Report Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) Do I have to install the adapter in the Windows 7 host which is an 64 bit OS though the kv laddersoftware only works in an 32 bits OS? Or should I install it in the virtual XP? Edited July 9, 2012 by kolonelvonklink
