Hi, just joined the forum. I am due to reburbish a couple of machines that use FX2n-32mr. These machines get switched off when not in use and i am mindful of the age of these machines and the plc. The batteries are not showing any alarms but am wondering how long they actually last. Should i just change them anyway and can this be done when powered up to save the programme. Also i had to fix a dodgy run/stop switch, just linked it out at the back of the pcb but is this a regular fault on these units. When i get the machines to work on i intend to replace the switch but wondered again whether its worth changing the one thats still working as a precaution. Any help gratefully received

I've never heard of a recurring problem with the RUN/STOP switches before. But the batteries should be replaced as indicated in the hardware manuals. I believe spec is 5 years, but I have customers who change them every 3. Had one plant that changed every single battery in every single device (PLC/HMI/RFID tag/radio/etc) every single year during shutdown.

And on the other side of the coin. I have been putting mitsubishi plc's in for 16 years and have never changed any battery (for those that need them) or ever seen a battery warning light. Of course I still have every program for every machine I ever wrote. Only last week I was called to resurrect a machine I programmed in 2001. It had an A series PLC and had been powered down for over a year The battery is at least 12 years old and the program was still live and kicking. I am not saying not changing the battery is the way to go - but having program back-ups certainly is.

I had to replace an FX once because the battery had exploded and dripped acid down the circuit board and stopped the PLC from powering up. No way I would go more than 5 years.

OK, i know what you mean, was also concerned that although there is no alarm, when powered down they quickly go from full charge to no charge in a few days, that would be annoying. Today i did get to the machines to download the programmes. Think i will recommend to client to replace both. cheers
