Connecting PLC to PC with ethernet and prog(HELP!)

Hello fellow forumers, I am new here and I am also new to PLC programming. Just yesterday i got my hands on a used simatic s7-1200 and i want to know how can i connect it to my computer (windows 7 x32). I've been told that all i need is an ethe cable but can you give me a hint as to how to connect this PLC? Also can i program it with anything else EXCEPT : Step 7? (its costy :/ ) Thank you in advance for your help! P.S: I'm sorry if I didnt post this thread in the correct section of the forum. P.S.2: Please excuse any language mistakes as English is not my native tongue.
