Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this. I'm trying to design the circuit for a filter crusher that we're fabricating in the shop and wonder if I should use relays and timers or dive into trying to learn about PLC's. I want it to be fully automated in order to make it simple to operate. The operator will simply put the filter in the machine and push the start button. Once the start button is pressed, the machine will begin to operate hydraulic ram "A" untill the door is closed. Once the door is closed, it will activate hydraulic ram "B" untill the crushing pressure has reached 15 tons, at which time it will stop for about a second to allow some pressure to relieve and then activate ram "A" to open the door, once the door is opened, it will once again activate ram "B" to continue pushing the filter out of the machine. Once ram "B" extends all the way the filter is pushed out from the machine and ram "B" begins to retract all the way to allow the operator to insert a new filter. Rinse and repeat. I've never used a PLC before but been reading up on them and sounds like a lot of fun, I'm thinking the DL05 would be a fair choice for this project. Once again thank you for any advice you can give me. Al

I would go PLC all the way it seems like a relitively simple system so it will be great for learning on. the only thing that I would worry about is how much time you have. Look into the small plc's the Omron cpm2a and also the Automation direct dl5 both good plc's for the money imo. Peace

Thank you for your time, I'll look into the Omron PLC also. This type of project is not a big rush for us, our main concern is keeping the tug boats running, so I'll have some time to learn it. Al

Ask the sales Rep. to quote you a Learnig or Starting Kit. Most brand have them. They come with a PLC the cable the programming software and a manual for you to learn the basics. Its very usefull and you can sometimes choose a PLC model . Its not always the smalles one.
