This one has NEVER failed me. Whichever you decide on make sure you get a model with the FTDI chipset. http://www.serialcomm.com/USB_adapters/USB_converters/usb_to_rs232_adapter/usb_to_rs232_adapter.product_general_info.aspx

Hi Samsonn, If you are using the converter on Windows 7 or Windows 8 - 8.1 machine, I suggest you to use ICP DAS USA I-7561U. You can check out ICP DAS USA, I-7561 or I-7561U Serial to USB Converters. http://www.icpdas-usa.com/i_7561.html?r=Kaan Thank you, Edited by Emperor

I've also had good results from the Keyspan unit that Ken suggested. The only things I haven't been able to connect to through it won't connect at all without a "real" serial port.

After many years and dozens of different devices, I finally found one that the Keyspan would not connect with, while the cheap generic one did work. It was the serial port on a radio modem by DataLinc Group: PLR6430. This was repeated with two different PCs. I still recommend the USA-19HS for everything else, but it does not hurt to hang onto some other model too.

I know this is a very old thread but the best converter I've found is from Syba: http://www.syba.com/index.php?controller=Product&action=Info&Id=870.57b6fbf02daa6_SybaPCMCIAtoSerial.png.7fe

It is an express PCMCIA card, uses a PCI chipset rather than a USB chipset, and has proven to be much more stable than any USB-serial converter I've used. The cost at the time I purchased it was relatively inexpensive. It is still available from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=syba+serial+expresscard&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Asyba+serial+expresscard

I've used it with Windows 7/64 and Windows 10 with no issues.

I still own a Belkin USB-serial converter that has worked very well. The reason I like it is because is has the link/read/write LEDs. Although the original design was only for 32-bit O/S, it will work with Windows 7/64. Here is the link for the discussion: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/belkin-f5u109-usb-pda-adapter/595f1fc7-0546-4c1e-9ff4-fcf51278c23a.

I have those two devices also. My Syba card has worked perfectly. The Belkin adapter works for most applications, but not all of them. I also have a Keyspan which will usually work when the Belkin doesn't.
