Samsonn Posted May 29, 2015 Report Posted May 29, 2015 Hello everybody, I am new here looking for a cheap but good quality USB to RS-232 adapter. please help, good price, good brand and good quality. Thanks Quote
BITS N BYTES Posted May 29, 2015 Report Posted May 29, 2015 This one has NEVER failed me. Whichever you decide on make sure you get a model with the FTDI chipset. http://www.serialcomm.com/USB_adapters/USB_converters/usb_to_rs232_adapter/usb_to_rs232_adapter.product_general_info.aspx 2 Quote
Ken Roach Posted May 29, 2015 Report Posted May 29, 2015 The one I universally recommend is the USA-19HS from Tripp-Lite/Keyspan. We have a half-dozen of them in the shop and don't bother with anything else. 2 Quote
BobB Posted May 30, 2015 Report Posted May 30, 2015 Yes - the FTDI is ther only chip to get - works with everything I have thrown at it. 1 Quote
Emperor Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 (edited) Hi Samsonn, If you are using the converter on Windows 7 or Windows 8 - 8.1 machine, I suggest you to use ICP DAS USA I-7561U. You can check out ICP DAS USA, I-7561 or I-7561U Serial to USB Converters. http://www.icpdas-usa.com/i_7561.html?r=Kaan Thank you, Edited June 1, 2015 by Emperor Quote
Joe E. Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 I've also had good results from the Keyspan unit that Ken suggested. The only things I haven't been able to connect to through it won't connect at all without a "real" serial port. 1 Quote
Crossbow Posted June 11, 2015 Report Posted June 11, 2015 Another vote for the Keyspan unit. That's what Mitsu tech support always recommended, and I have always used. Works with everything I have thrown at it. 1 Quote
Chris Elston Posted June 14, 2015 Report Posted June 14, 2015 Keyspan gets my vote here too...works for everything. The key is the FTDI chipset as well as everyone else has mentioned. Quote
Samsonn Posted July 31, 2015 Author Report Posted July 31, 2015 It is not a good brand "Emperor"... I have used some other ICPDAS ...many bugs and malfunctions! Quote
OkiePC Posted August 22, 2015 Report Posted August 22, 2015 After many years and dozens of different devices, I finally found one that the Keyspan would not connect with, while the cheap generic one did work. It was the serial port on a radio modem by DataLinc Group: PLR6430. This was repeated with two different PCs. I still recommend the USA-19HS for everything else, but it does not hurt to hang onto some other model too. Quote
DoraL Posted February 1, 2016 Report Posted February 1, 2016 Hi Samsonn, I've used the I-7561U USB to RS-232 converter as well and it worked great so far. It supports Windows 8 and 8.1 and the price is okay compared with other brands. Quote
pop29684 Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 I know this is a very old thread but the best converter I've found is from Syba: http://www.syba.com/index.php?controller=Product&action=Info&Id=870. It is an express PCMCIA card, uses a PCI chipset rather than a USB chipset, and has proven to be much more stable than any USB-serial converter I've used. The cost at the time I purchased it was relatively inexpensive. It is still available from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=syba+serial+expresscard&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Asyba+serial+expresscard I've used it with Windows 7/64 and Windows 10 with no issues. I still own a Belkin USB-serial converter that has worked very well. The reason I like it is because is has the link/read/write LEDs. Although the original design was only for 32-bit O/S, it will work with Windows 7/64. Here is the link for the discussion: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/belkin-f5u109-usb-pda-adapter/595f1fc7-0546-4c1e-9ff4-fcf51278c23a. 1 Quote
Mendon Systems Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 I have those two devices also. My Syba card has worked perfectly. The Belkin adapter works for most applications, but not all of them. I also have a Keyspan which will usually work when the Belkin doesn't. Quote
Kann Posted March 30, 2022 Report Posted March 30, 2022 Check it out -> USB232 A very good and reliable device, and at the same time cheap! Quote
