Considering using some form of vision system for quality checks. Have been to seminars on Cognex and DVT - both are capable of doing what we need to do, but was wondering which system other members have had experience with, and which system was preferred. Thanks

I am 100% Cognex ALL the way. I really like the spreadsheet programming method. It takes a little bit to see and understand how it works but once you get the hang of it, it's awesome. I like it because I consider myself an Expert Excel wiz and this camera and excel are one in the same. I've used just about every vision system on the market, and I rank Cognex to be on the top of my list and the best vision system to do just about anything I need. I am able to "program my way" out of a problem every time and have not found any limits in the Cognex system for most everyday applications. I truly like the custom screen I can make to make the application easier for the operator. If you get a stand alone unit, you'll never need to connect a laptop to the vision system to make a small adjustment. Ask me any questions you'd like about the Cognex and I can answer it. AMEN to the lighting comment in the previous post; lighting and lenses are very crucial. I have had much success with the DVT product (Legend 530) on servo gantry positioning applications, where sub-pixel camera coordinates were being transformed to cartesian coordinates for 4-axis servo positioning. DVT will listen to customer feedback and will incorporate sound ideas into their product. The new INTELLECT software now incorporates a background VB script for Auto-intensity/Auto-exposure. This is something that we had written ourselves (as have many other users I'm sure), they listened and added it to the product.

thanks for the feedback have a application where we are printing and applying labels on packages with info such as the size, color, etc.. In the past we have not been concerned if this label was applied or not, due to fact that we did 100% inspection of each case. Have went out on a limb, and told management, that since we are scanning and rejecting any packages that do not have the correct barcode labels, then we could do the same if we detect if the SKU label is applied as well, and eliminate 100% inspection. Well I was able to do this, using a break beam sensor to trigger a window in the program when to look at a certain area on a package with a high speed registration mark sensor. This works fine with detecting if a printed label was applied or not, sinc the registration mark sensor will see the print as registration marks. Now, wanting to take it a step farther and not only look for presence of label , but also the quality. This is why I am now getting a interest in Vision. I got a flyer from Cognex about the new Checker Vision System. What are your thoughts on this system.

Have heard that you get what you pay for? My opinion of this system is yes it's CHEAP, but there is a reason it's cheap. To compete with the rest of the CHEAP vision system on the market like Banners: GEO System. http://www.bannerengineering.com/products/vision/ You better make sure that this vision sensor will do your application. If you require anything from a traditional vision system could do, these two systems are not your answer and you'll be saying to yourself. Why do I buy this system.... Make sure that the application is correct and you know you can do it without any problems. Paying more money for a vision system in this case would be getting an Insight System, like a Insight 5100. The difference between and Insight and the Checker Vision, is the capibilties and tools you can use. Make sure you do your homework and send some sample parts for Cognex FREE evaluation service. http://www.cognex.com/AppEvalRequest/default.asp In summary, the Checker system is for very LOW END vision applications by my standards...just make sure it will work for you before you purchase. Don't by it them smear Cognex's name in the mud because it wouldn't work. It's probably because it was misapplied.

Kind of caught this late, but I have been evaluating the Cognex 5100 AND DVT 530 Legend for multiple parts recognition and robot (MotoMan) guidance. In a nutshell, night and day difference! ControlLogix is the PLC that I am utilizing and EVERYTHING is done thru ethernet. This minimized the electrical wiring/labor and eliminated the need of a breakout board (DVT would have still required such.) Native mode messaging and simple row/cell changes done thru part specific call outs on the HMI. Wow! Cognex made things so much easier! ---5150
