308guru Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Help. I’m using WindowsXP SP2 & a Mitsubishi E150 connected to an FX1N. Our new notebook doesn’t have a serial port on it, only USB. I’ve tried a Belkin USB/Serial adapter and it just doesn’t work. No matter what settings I try, it won’t communicate with the E150. Does anybody have a cable they recommend that will work? I need USB to RS232 on the E150. Thanks.
Sergei Troizky Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Does your adapter work with anything else? I had lots of problems with mine (Tripp-Lite) before I realized it's strange behavior. Although it is plug-and-play, it must be plugged (or unplugged and replugged) when the application is already launched. In my XP SP1 this applies not to all but to most of PLC/MMI related applications. Little annoying, but sometimes there is no choice. Also, ensure that no other application is occupying the port at the moment (especially legacy software).
Colin Carpenter Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Westermo make a seriously good but seriously expensive unit which converts "ethernet to RS232" and "ethernet to RS422/485". Seems like every laptop these days has an ethernet port, but no serial port. Strangely, the Westermo rep told me they they "just don't do USB" .... seems like it's not considered a "real" comms option. PS. Every Panasonic Toughbook has a real serial port .... it's what I ended up buying. Lotsa money, but quality kit.
Chris Elston Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Will this do the trick for you? http://shopv2.mrplc.com/product_info.php/products_id/72
waynes Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 You can try the Moxa USB<->Serial convertor. Model U1110. It works for our entire department. All my guys have come back with positive responses to it. It works well on Mits, AB and Siemens. Maybe you got an agent in your area/ country?
308guru Posted March 1, 2006 Author Report Posted March 1, 2006 No, that cable has the round 9 pin connector that plugs into the PLC. I want to keep the E150 plugged into that port and use the RS232 (DB9) connector for programming and monitoring. That way I can use the E150 at the same time. Unless there is some sort of adapter to go from round 9 pin to DB9. I just hate the word "adapter" though.
tmu Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Aten works. http://www.aten-usa.com/?product&cat=595&Item=UC232A
miked007 Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Get "Keyspan" USB to Serial ---it kicks booty and works like a charm with every app I;ve used so far (including Monotouch HMI) I think it's like 40 bucks ----and you can assign any "COM" port with an easy software app that comes with it... doough---I forgot to add the site :www.keyspan.com FYI, I use it daily and never had a problem---I scored my Keyspan from Mitsu (in chicago) at a conference
Steve Bailey Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Before you throw out the adapter you already have, make sure that plug-n-pray assigns it a COM port number that's compatible with the Mitsubishi software. When you plug in the adapter, it may get set up at a high number like COM9. You have to make sure that your programming software is set up to use the same port. It is also possible in device manager to force the adapter to use a specific COM port number.
308guru Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 I just ordered a Keyspan adapter. Should be here in a couple days. I'll give that a try and post with my results. The Mitsubishi dealer we use also recommended the Keyspan. Thanks!
Crossbow Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 The Keyspan UAS-19 series works flawlessly with any Mitsubishi software. The CP technologies CP-US-03 also works fine. We've seen problems with the Belkin and I/OGear ones.
