peeky Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Hi Everyone We just got a new Dell laptop (Inspiron-Yeah I know a Latitude would of been better)with no serial port running XP. We have a usb-serial adapter using prolific drivers but just cant seem to get it to communicate properly with Simatic 505 processors We need to communicate with: Simatic 505-using Tisoft Simatic S5-Step 5 A/B Micrologic-RS Logic A/B SLC 500-RS logic A/B Panelviews-Panelbuilder A/B servo controllers-GML Ultra Indramat servo controllers-Motion Manager and various other stuff Our older laptops are Simatic PG740's(one has failed)running Windows 98 SE and have been OK but you know progress and all that things move on eventually. What are our best options? Would it be better to change to Windows based software for our Siemens PLC's? Which adapter do you recommend? Any other advice/suggestions? Thanks in advance Cheers Brian Quote

Moggie Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Have a look at the following web site. www.process-informatik.de They have a S5 and S7 PLC interfaces for USB. Hope it helps. Quote
JesperMP Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 Hi Peeky. About replacement of the old PG740's: Is the STEP5 version on these PGs a relatively recent version, i.e v 7.0+ ? If so, you can move STEP5 to any normal PC. You may have to consider getting an update to v 7.2 to allow STEP5 to run reliably under Win 2000+. If STEP5 is v 6.x then you cannot move it to a standard PC. That said, an upgrade to STEP5 is quite expensive. You may consider "S5 for Windows" from http://www.ibhsoftec-sps.de/ It is much less expensive and it is a true Windows program. There are other STEP5 alternatives, but "S5 for Windows" seems to be the most popular. You will also need a "prommer" for the memory modules. Quote
peeky Posted May 13, 2006 Author Report Posted May 13, 2006 Thanks for your replies guys We will probably go for S5 for Windows and another program to replace Tisoft(cant recall the name at the moment). Also I'm pushing to get a Dell Latitude rather then an Inspiron because of the serial port. Chako Thanks for your offer but not needed at this stage.i will keep you in mind if needed in the future Cheers Brian Quote
