We are going to be getting some new equipment in and we were just discussing lowering the incident energy of an arc flash. Currently a Class J and a Class RK1 have about the same current limiting capablity but I have heard that fuse companies are developing fuses to reduce arc flashes even more. Would we be best to specify a Class J, a Class RK1 fuse, or do you think that fuse companies will make the new arc flash fuses available for both a Class J and a Class RK1?

Well I talked to a fuse manufacturer and they said specify the Class J fuse. They will probably develop RK1 fuses to reduce the incident energy too but it will only be recommended as a retrofit of older controls. Class Js technology will be developed quicker Class Js should be used on all new applications according to them
